Your Israeli counterparty owes you money. Now what?
You delivered the goods, completed the project, or paid in advance – and the Israeli side has gone quiet. Distance, an unfamiliar legal system, and a language barrier make many foreign companies write off debts that are actually collectible.
Israeli law provides a clear toolkit for creditors, and most commercial debts here are resolved without a full trial when the pressure is applied correctly and early.
The path that usually works
1. Assessment before action. Before spending anything, check the debtor: is the company active? Does it own assets? Are there existing judgments or liens against it? A debtor check in Israel takes days, not weeks, and tells you whether collection is realistic.
2. A demand letter that carries weight. A precise demand letter from an Israeli law firm, in Hebrew, citing the correct legal basis, changes the conversation. Debtors who ignored emails from abroad tend to respond when a local firm sets a deadline.
3. Negotiation from strength. Many files close here: a structured payment arrangement, backed by a signed agreement that is enforceable without going back to court if breached.
4. Court or execution proceedings. When negotiation fails, Israeli courts handle commercial debt claims routinely, and foreign companies can sue in Israel without maintaining a presence here. Judgments can reach bank accounts, receivables, and assets through the Execution Office.
What we need from you to start
Contracts or purchase orders, invoices, correspondence, and any company details you have on the debtor. That is usually enough for an initial assessment.
In our experience, foreign creditors often wait too long because the process feels opaque from abroad. The files that end well are usually the ones where the first local step – a debtor check and a properly framed demand – happened within weeks, not months. Limitation periods in Israel are real, and delay also gives a struggling debtor time to dissipate assets.
